The 2024 Public Broadcasters International (PBI 2024) conference just concluded, marking a significant milestone in the global dialogue surrounding public media.
It was a pleasure to welcome you to Ottawa, and we thank you for taking such an active part in the conference! Over three days, we had critical discussions on the rise of artificial intelligence, the spread of disinformation, ever-increasing audience fragmentation, threats to public broadcasters’ long-term sustainability, and how best to amplify Indigenous voices.
Here are the highlights from the PBI 2024 conference:
The Declaration calls on public media worldwide to ensure accessibility to news, use AI responsibly for public good, look to social media platforms for increased accountability, and restore civil democratic debate.
The project’s success in working to transform how digital platforms are used for public connection and conversation has attracted two new partners and extended its activities until 2027.
Hosted by CBC/Radio-Canada, this year’s conference brought together leaders from more than 40 public broadcasters from over 20 countries.
This is the first time the annual PBI conference, which brings together public media leaders from around the globe, has devoted a full day to focus on Indigenous Peoples and public broadcasting.
First announced at PBI Ottawa 2024, the podcast is the latest outcome of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Australia’s ABC and
CBC/Radio-Canada.
Thank you to our partners and to everyone who made this event a success!
As announced today, next year’s PBI conference will be hosted by Bulgarian National Radio in Sofia, Bulgaria. We look forward to it!
Safe travels — we'll be sharing photos of the event with you in the coming weeks.
